Hana, the inaugural piece in my collection of figurative sculptures, marks a pivotal moment in my artistic journey. Named after a small town on the remote eastern coast of Maui, it captures the essence of a man I encountered there, raking leaves in the shadows of the Hana Coast Resort.
This work was born from a photograph I took on my travels, a fleeting moment of everyday life that I chose to immortalize in bronze. It represents my core belief that the mundane can be elevated to the sublime, transforming an ordinary man into an enduring work of fine art. The sculpture, like all those that followed, is a simple silhouette, free of elaborate performance. Yet, within its form, it pulses with a quiet energy, a duality of stillness and motion, and an innuendo that hints at the man's inner world.
The bronze bears my fingerprints, a testament to the intimate and deeply human process of its creation. This sculpture is the culmination of a decade spent in the film industry, supervising projects like The Chronicles of Narnia and Harry Potter , a period that sharpened my eye for detail and the human form. It was through "Hana" that I first connected with the mentors at Artworks Foundry, a relationship that has guided my path ever since. Hana is a reflection of the human condition and the profound skill required to express emotion with realism, a skill I have honed over a lifetime. It is the piece that opened the door to a new chapter, bridging my past in film with my future as a sculptor.
